There is nothing that strikes up a conversation between two strangers faster than talking about pets. Pet lovers don’t need to share the same beliefs or have identical viewpoints or similar world views.
They can talk for hours on end about their furry friends.
Pet lovers have a lot more in common than just pet talk. Here are five more things.
1. Our Devices Are Full of Pet Pics.
No phone memory is large enough to handle the volume of digital pictures pet lovers take. I don’t know about you, but I have to clear my iphone’s storage quite often. My small piece of cloud real estate stays full and my external hard drive is begging for space – all because of animal pictures and videos. Of course, every picture has immense value, so deleting is not an option. Thankfully, no one has diagnosed this as a condition. Yet.
2. The Pet Belongs Here. Outsiders Don’t.
Ever have a visitor who doesn’t appreciate your pets? They object to the cat jumping on your couch. They don’t like hearing the guinea pigs squealing for attention and they notice every piece of dog fur clinging to their clothes. They are quite vocal about the lack of rules you seem to have for Fido and they do not understand why you’d rather stay home than attend social events.
That person is not going to fit in. They have to go.
3. That Voice We Use.
You know the voice. We all do it. Our furry friends will NEVER understand us if we talk normally. We raise the pitch and change the tone. It’s a special voice reserved for our own pets and those that belong to someone else.
Secretly, we believe animals know exactly what we are saying, but only when we use that voice.
4. We Interact More With Pet Social Media Than People.
And why wouldn’t we? Pets are cute and fun and lovely. When they do something they shouldn’t, it’s often due to their base nature or instincts. That is not the case with our own species.
5. They Cost Money. We Gladly Pay.
Plenty a pet lover has gone without because the fur baby has a need. Maybe it’s a high vet bill or expensive medication. High quality pet food costs money. Pet sitting, dog walking, supplies, toys, enrichment items – it all adds up. Pet lovers will do what it takes to give their animals a healthy and happy, long life – even when the cost is high.
Here is a bonus something pet lovers have in common: When the journey of our beloved pet ends, we swear we will never love another one that much. But we do it again. And again. And we won’t stop doing it our entire lives. That’s the way it should be with family members, even the ones that have fur.
This is so true! I love it! What an amazing idea this is.
Thank you, Lisa!
Pets are great companions and I have had them most of my life. They don’t live long, depending on kind, of course, a parrot or a turtle may live longer, but I have a thing about furry things that just has to be a part of my dog, cat or guinea pig, or any rodent type animal. Slick things, or what doesn’t have legs, EEEWWW!!! Thanks for doing this, Jana. What a great idea.
Thank you, G.M. Pets are so wonderful 🙂
